Color Bands

At Christmas, my uncle passed on to me a glossy Italian art calendar with gorgeous illustrations of the human form obscured behind dreamy filmy foliage and other patterns. It took a while to figure out what I could do with it.

I tried soaking the paper. Sometimes that creates an interesting crackle effect. But for all its heavy glossiness, this paper fell apart when wet, and the remaining fragments dried stiff and unworkable. Hmmmm.

Several book arts writers reminded me that gesso can be used as a resist. So I painted a piece of paper with gesso, textured the damp gesso with a bit of cardboard, and applied pastels to it. This was interesting (you be the judge), so I think I have found a path forward.
