A recent Mail Me Some Art theme was circular art, meant to be stamped and sent through the mail as created (not in an envelope). I completed one card and sent it off before the deadline. Altered Book Contest

After a couple years of lurking, at last I made an entry for my public library’s Altered Book Contest. My alterations consist of cutting and pasting, of course, and the book is fairly sticky. It consumed two whole gluesticks, and I savaged at least a dozen magazines, from Architectural Digest to Farm Journal.

The original book struck me as lame, and at first I was going to lampoon it. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that it would be mean-spirited to follow that path.

As I worked away at the project, it dawned on me that this little vanity published picture book, its story told in rhyme, may have resulted from a real experience shared by a grandmother and the three little girls in the title. If this is so, then the grandmother was neither a great artist nor a good poet, but by gum, she followed her creative impulse and she finished her project, which is pretty admirable.

Flickr felt like the right place for the scans I made of some of the pages; take a look if you are curious, and we’ll see if I take a prize. Here’s the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hollowjb/
